Never miss a York bin day again

York uses a sort-at-home box system rather than one mixed recycling bin — you separate paper and card from everything else across recycling boxes, collected fortnightly. General rubbish goes in a grey bin, and food waste is collected weekly.

How York bin collections work

City of York Council collects the grey bin (general, non-recyclable household waste) fortnightly, and your recycling boxes on the alternate week. Households get three boxes, sorted into two groups: plastics, cans, tins, foil, cartons and glass can be mixed together in one, while paper and cardboard must be kept separate in another. Food waste is collected weekly in a green caddy. Garden waste goes on a paid subscription, collected fortnightly. Wash and squash items, and present up to six boxes at the kerbside by 7am on collection day.

Common questions

When are bins collected in York?

York collects the grey (general waste) bin fortnightly and recycling boxes on the alternate week — with plastics, cans, glass and cartons mixed in one box and paper and card kept separate — plus a weekly food caddy and a paid garden service. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always know what to sort out.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track York's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official York council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with York or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
