Westmorland and Furness is a large, rural unitary formed in 2023 from Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland, and is still harmonising its collections — so exactly what you have depends on which former district you live in. The broad pattern is a grey or black bin for rubbish and a blue bin or boxes for recycling, both fortnightly.
Westmorland and Furness Council collects general waste (a grey or black bin) and recycling (a blue bin, or boxes and bags in some areas — paper, card, glass, cans and plastics) on alternating fortnightly weeks. Food waste is collected weekly in some areas. Garden waste goes on an opt-in paid subscription (introduced 1 April 2026), collected fortnightly. Because the council merged three former district services (Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland), container types and exact arrangements still vary by area, and a harmonised borough-wide service using wheeled bins is being rolled out. This information was correct at the time of writing; the council has proposals to change its collection schedule currently under review, so your service may be updated in future.
