Never miss a Southwark bin day again

Southwark catches people out with its green bin being general rubbish, not recycling. Blue is your mixed recycling, and food waste is collected weekly and free. Whether you get wheelie bins or use bags depends on whether you live in a house or a flat.

How Southwark bin collections work

The London Borough of Southwark gives houses and street-level flats a green wheelie bin for general non-recyclable waste and a blue wheelie bin for mixed dry recycling (paper, card, glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, aerosols, foil, cartons and plastics, all mixed loose). Residents in flats above street level use a weekly doorstep sack service — black bags for rubbish, clear bags for recycling. Food waste is collected weekly and free, using a kitchen caddy and outdoor or communal food bin (rolling out to remaining flats). Garden waste goes on a paid subscription. Note the local quirk: green is general rubbish here, not recycling. Present containers by 6am on collection day.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Southwark?

Southwark collects the green (general waste) and blue (mixed recycling) bins, with a weekly free food caddy and a paid garden service; flats use black bags for rubbish and clear bags for recycling. Note green is general rubbish here, not recycling. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always put the right container out.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Southwark's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Southwark council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Southwark or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
