Never miss a Southampton bin day again

Southampton refreshed its scheme in 2026, and one thing catches people out: the general waste bin has a green lid, while recycling has a blue lid. Glass is kept separate in its own box, and there's a new weekly food caddy.

How Southampton bin collections work

Southampton City Council collects the green-lidded bin (general, non-recyclable household waste) and the blue-lidded recycling bin (paper, card, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, food and drink cans and cartons — clean and loose, no carrier bags) on alternating fortnightly weeks. Glass bottles and jars go separately in a glass box, collected on your recycling week. A weekly food waste caddy was rolled out in phases through 2026. Garden waste goes on a paid subscription, collected fortnightly. Note new collection routes began on 5 January 2026, so many households have a different day. Present containers by 6am on collection day.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Southampton?

Southampton collects the green-lidded (general waste) and blue-lidded (recycling) bins on alternating fortnights, with glass kept separate in a box, a weekly food caddy, and a paid garden service. Note the quirk — green lid is general waste here, not recycling. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always put the right bin out.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Southampton's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Southampton council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Southampton or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
