Never miss a Reading bin day again

Reading uses a grey bin for rubbish and a red bin for all your mixed recycling, alternating week about, with a weekly food caddy that's been running borough-wide since 2020. Garden waste is a separate paid green service.

How Reading bin collections work

Reading Borough Council collects the grey bin (general, non-recyclable household waste, usually 140 litres) and the red bin (mixed dry recycling — paper, card, glass bottles and jars, food tins, drink cans, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, loose) on alternating fortnightly weeks. Food waste is collected weekly using a kitchen caddy and outdoor food bin, on the same day as your other collection but by a separate crew. Garden waste goes in a green bin or bags on a paid subscription, collected fortnightly. Properties without wheelie bins use sacks. Present containers at the boundary by 6am on collection day.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Reading?

Reading collects the grey (general waste) and red (mixed recycling) bins on alternating fortnights, with a weekly food caddy and a paid green garden service. Note grey is general and red is recycling here. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always know which bin is due.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Reading's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Reading council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Reading or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
