Never miss a Portsmouth bin day again

Portsmouth collects general rubbish weekly — it's a dense island city with lots of flats — and mixed recycling fortnightly in a green bin. Note that glass isn't accepted at the kerbside here; it goes to recycling banks instead. Food waste is collected weekly.

How Portsmouth bin collections work

Portsmouth City Council collects the black bin (general, non-recyclable household waste) weekly, and the green recycling bin (paper, card, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, tins, cans and empty aerosols — clean and loose) fortnightly. Glass, textiles and cartons are NOT collected at the kerbside — take glass to a local recycling bank. Food waste is collected weekly, on the same day as rubbish. Garden waste goes on a paid subscription. Flat-fronted properties present sacks rather than wheelie bins. Put containers out by 6am on collection day.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Portsmouth?

Portsmouth collects the black (general waste) bin weekly and the green (mixed recycling) bin fortnightly, with a weekly food caddy and a paid garden service. Note the local quirk — glass isn't collected kerbside here and must go to a recycling bank. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always know what's due.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Portsmouth's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Portsmouth council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Portsmouth or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
