The broad pattern is a black bin for rubbish, a grey bin for recycling, and a green bin for garden waste, with food waste collections expanding across the area.
North Northamptonshire Council collects the black bin (general refuse) weekly in most areas — in Kettering and Wellingborough, food waste currently goes in the black bin, while Corby and East Northants have a separate food waste collection. The grey bin takes mixed recycling (paper, card, glass bottles and jars, cans, and plastic bottles, pots and tubs), collected fortnightly. Garden waste goes in a green bin on a paid subscription, collected fortnightly. Separate weekly food waste collections are being rolled out to the remaining areas by late 2026. Present bins by 7am (6:30am in some areas) on collection day.
