Never miss a Derby bin day again

Derby keeps to a clear three-colour scheme: black for rubbish, blue for all your dry recycling, and brown for garden waste. As of spring 2026, food waste moved out of the brown bin and into a new green food container collected on its own.

How Derby bin collections work

Derby City Council collects the black bin (non-recyclable household waste) and the blue bin (dry recycling — paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, food tins, drink cans, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cartons) on alternating fortnightly weeks. Garden waste goes in the brown bin, collected fortnightly from March to October and less often over winter. From 31 March 2026, food waste moved out of the brown bin into a new green food waste container, collected separately. Present bins at the kerbside by 6:30am, or after 5pm the evening before.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Derby?

Derby collects the black (general waste) and blue (dry recycling) bins on alternating fortnights, a brown garden bin (fortnightly March to October), and — since spring 2026 — a separate green food waste container. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you never mix up black week with blue week.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Derby's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Derby council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Derby or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
