Never miss a Colchester bin day again

Colchester collects general rubbish and mixed recycling on alternating fortnights, with glass and a weekly food caddy alongside. The council is moving some areas to wheeled bins through 2026, so what you have may change depending on your area.

How Colchester bin collections work

Colchester City Council collects the black bin (or black sacks, limited to three per fortnight — general non-recyclable waste) and mixed dry recycling (green-lidded bin, or a green box and clear sacks — paper, card, plastics, tins and cans) on alternating fortnightly weeks. Glass is collected separately, also fortnightly. Food waste is collected weekly using a kitchen caddy and outdoor caddy. Garden waste goes on a paid subscription. From June 2026 the council began moving some areas to a wheeled-bin service for recycling and rubbish, with full rollout by March 2027, so container types vary by area. This information was correct at the time of writing; the council has proposals to change its collection schedule currently under review, so your service may be updated in future. Present containers by 7am. Waste is disposed of via Essex County Council.

Common questions

When are bins collected in Colchester?

Colchester collects the black bin or sacks (general waste) and mixed recycling on alternating fortnights, with separate glass, a weekly food caddy, and a paid garden service. The council is rolling out wheeled bins through 2026–27. My Bin Day reads your council schedule and texts you the evening before each collection so you always know what's due.

How much does this cost?

My Bin Day is 99p a month — less than a coffee a year. Cancel any time by replying STOP to a reminder and you won't be charged again.

Do you handle bank holidays?

Yes. We track Colchester's published schedule, including the shifts that bank holidays and seasonal changes cause, so your reminder always reflects the real collection date.

Is this an official Colchester council service?

No — My Bin Day is an independent service and is not affiliated with Colchester or any council. We simply read the council's published collection schedule and send you a friendly reminder.
